Ocean Day

On World Oceans Day, Molecor reaffirms its leadership in the fight against microplastic pollution, demonstrating how the plastics industry can play an active role in protecting “the wonder that sustains us”, as this year’s 2025 theme puts it.

The key: A firm commitment to Operation Clean Sweep

Plastic pollution in the oceans is an increasingly alarming issue, with estimates suggesting they now contain over 150 million tonnes. This has led to a growing presence of microplastics in both the environment and the food chain, posing a significant risk to human health. Today, 8 June – World Oceans Day – is a timely opportunity to raise awareness and set clear goals to prevent and reduce the serious environmental impact of microplastics on our seas and oceans.

This is why Molecor maintains its strong commitment to addressing this issue by supporting Operation Clean Sweep (OCS), the global voluntary initiative developed by the plastics industry to prevent the unintentional release of microplastics into the environment. As a result of this commitment, OCS Europe certifications have been renewed at all four of Molecor’s national production facilities.

In addition, as part of its alignment with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this initiative directly supports SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Molecor, a sector leader in OCS management

Molecor has established itself as a leader in managing the Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) programme over the past several years, standing out for its ongoing commitment to implementing OCS best practices and estimating environmental leaks in accordance with European legislation.

This commitment is evident in its collaboration with ANAIP and Plastics Europe – the organisations managing the programme in Spain. Notable highlights include hosting the 2nd OCS Showtour, which provided an on-site demonstration of the measures and good practices introduced by the company to prevent accidental leakage into the environment, and participating as speakers at the Pellet Loss Estimation Seminar, where Molecor shared not only its approach to OCS best practice implementation but also its experience with certification and, crucially, the process of estimating unintentional releases. Molecor also plays an active role in various working groups, both nationally and at European level, helping align industry practices with the regulations currently being developed by the European Commission in this area.
